Here are a few of my top picks that I believe represent superb value for money.
“Men are like wine – some turn to vinegar, but the best improve with age.” ― Pope John XXIII
Let’s get to it…
Whites
Sainsbury’s - Coteaux Du Giennois Sauvignon Blanc, Taste the Difference mix six £6 (down from £11)
If you like Sancerre then this is a really superb option. It’s from basically the other side of the fence. Super light in style and well-balanced.
Wine Society - The Society's Greek White 2022 £8.95
I went to the Wine Society’s Press tasting two weeks ago and was really impressed by this wine. With a blend of 52% moschofilero / 48% roditis grapes, it has a really good fruit intensity to it and a great intro to Greek whites and the value that can be found.
Rosé
Majestic Wine - ASDA Extra Special Côtes de Provence Rosé mix six £6 (down from £9)
By now you might know my feelings on Provence Rosé - unless it makes you feel good buying one of the big brands, stick low. For a third of the price of Whispering Angel, this is doing very similar things. People like it and I guarantee you will in the Easter sun at this price!
Sparkling
Sainsbury’s - Etienne Dumont, Brut, Champagne, Non Vintage mix six £13.50 (down from £18)
Champagne is about taste and experience. If you are having a party over Easter and you want to elevate it by having Champagne - at £13.50 this is just a ridiculous offer. It might not hold the prestige and intensity of the big boys but it will still make you and your guests feel good! The fact it’s not an own-label wine separates it slightly.
Reds
Sainsbury’s - Côtes Du Ventoux, Taste the Difference mix six £6.38 (down from £10)
This is an absolute steal from the Rhône. It’s nowhere near as full-bodied as Chateauneuf du Pape but it’s a well-balanced wine and will be more than acceptable with family and friends over the Easter dinner table.
Co-op - Extreme, Bobal, Spain £10
If you like a peppery red (like Shiraz) then this is the one for you. Bobal is the grape and at its best makes wines with plenty of character. I think this is a superb full expression and another example of why Spain is going to offer so much going forward.
Majestic - Coney 'Pizzicato' Pinot Noir 2020, Martinborough mix six £15.99 (down from £18.99)
I loved this wine when I worked at Majestic and haven’t seen it in stock for a while. I think it’s a superb expression of the grape. It is light though so I’d avoid having it with food.
Sweet
Co-op - Irresistible, Pedro Ximenez Sherry 37.5cl £7.50
I was invited to a meal with the Co-op last week and this was the star of the show for me. If you have a sweet tooth I strongly suggest giving this a try. For an extra indulgence, pour it on top of some vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
As always my recommendations are completely independent and I will always tell you otherwise if not.
