I hope you had a superb weekend.
Let’s start making the world of wine more enjoyable and easier to understand and hopefully add a little bit of sunshine to the Monday blues:
The Wine Paradox:
Most people want to learn about wine.
Most people in reality, don’t actually want to learn about wine.
The explanation:
The good: Wine is generally perceived as a sophisticated product that can add a little bit of magic to our lives. Therefore naturally we are curious to know more about it.
The bad: We typically enjoy wine at the end of a long week or during a celebration for instance. These are not times we want to sit down and get the text book out or hear unsexy words like acidity. When, during our busy lives are we going to sit down and study about wine?
The ugly: The wine world is anything but simple. Multiply the amount of grapes by the amount of regions, by the rules and regulations and it is a vortex of variables which is impossible to get your head around. Add this to the fact that 95% of wine articles and write-ups are over explained and no wonder it’s easier to pick a bottle by the most attractive label on the shelf.
The solution:
We need simple points of relevance to relate everything back to. I believe once you know the basics behind one grape, one region and one set of rules and regs your appreciation of the wine is going to start multiplying instead of being flummoxed by the variables. Let’s keep it stupidly simple and together we can dismantle the paradox of wine and absorb information.
Over the coming weeks I will introduce one grape, one region and one set of rules and regs - helping erode the paradox of wine. So your homework this week is to source a bottle of Merlot and I’ll be checking-in with you next week with more guidance.

Ps share, like and comment on this so we can start changing the game for the better.
My advice to wine novices: I am a great fan of diversity and trying new wines. My inspiration used to be Jancis Robinson who advised trying different varieties. These days I am more inclined to follow Mae West who said ""
I can concur regarding the John X Merriman and the Duckhorn - both great wines.
Is the Merriman a blend with Cab Sav ?.
